Ludo Rules and Winning Strategy: How to Play Ludo Online with Friends
· 8 min read

Ludo is the game half of Kenya grew up playing on a wooden board at home. It looks like pure luck, but strong players win far more often than they should. The dice decide what you can do; you decide what you do. This guide covers the Ludo rules as we play them on Arena254, then the strategies that separate winners from everyone else.
The goal
Each player has four tokens in their home base. You race them around the board and into your home column. The first player to get all four tokens home wins.
Ludo is played by 2, 3 or 4 players, each with their own colour: red, green, yellow and blue.
Ludo rules, step by step
1. Rolling a six to leave base
A token can only leave its base when you roll a 6. It enters the board on your colour's start square.
2. Moving
On each roll, move one of your tokens forward by the number shown. You choose which token to move, and that choice is where skill comes in.
3. Bonus rolls
You get another roll when you:
- roll a 6;
- capture an opponent's token;
- get a token home.
4. Three sixes in a row
Roll three sixes in a row and your turn ends immediately. You can't keep rolling forever.
5. Captures
Land exactly on a square occupied by a single opponent token and you capture it: it goes back to its base and has to start again with a 6. You also earn a bonus roll.
6. Safe squares
The board has eight safe squares, marked with stars, including each colour's start square. A token on a safe square cannot be captured.
7. Blocks
Two or more tokens of the same colour on one ordinary square form a block. Opponents cannot pass through or land on it. Blocks are powerful for protecting tokens and slowing opponents down.
8. Getting home: the exact roll
After a full lap, your token turns into your private home column. You need the exact number to reach home. If your roll is too big, that token can't move.
9. Turn timer (online)
When you play online on Arena254, each turn has a 25-second timer. If it runs out, the server plays a fair roll for you, and missing three turns in a row puts you out of the game. Every die is rolled by our server using provably fair dice: the server commits to its secret seed before the game starts and reveals it at the end, so you can check every single roll.
Nine strategies to win more Ludo games
- Get tokens out early. A token stuck in base is useless. Use your early sixes to bring tokens onto the board so you have choices later.
- Spread your risk, but don't spread too thin. Two or three tokens in play is ideal: enough options to use any roll, not so many that they all sit in danger.
- Hunt with your back tokens. Opponent tokens just ahead of yours (1–6 squares) are capture targets. Tokens just behind you are threats.
- Count the danger zone. Before you move, check which opponents are within six squares behind your landing square. If several are, pick a different move or a safe square.
- Use safe squares as stepping stones. Moving from star to star is slower but much safer, especially late in the game.
- Build blocks in front of the leader. A block right in front of the player who is winning can stall them for several turns.
- Don't rush one token home. Racing a single token while three wait in base usually loses. Advance as a team.
- Capture when it's cheap. A capture costs your opponent a whole lap and gives you a bonus roll. If you can capture without leaving yourself exposed, it's almost always right.
- Play the endgame carefully. With tokens near home, think about which token needs which exact number so you don't waste rolls.
