How to play 8-Ball Pool

Pocket your whole group (solids 1–7 or stripes 9–15), then sink the 8 in the pocket you call.

The break

  • Balls are racked at random with the 1 at the apex, the 8 in the centre and a solid and a stripe in the back corners.
  • The breaker is chosen at random and may place the cue ball anywhere behind the head string.
  • If the 8 drops on the break it is spotted and play continues; it is not a loss.

Choosing groups

  • After the break the table is open: you may hit any ball except the 8 first.
  • The first ball you legally pocket after the break decides your group.

Legal shots

  • The cue ball must first hit one of your own balls (or, on an open table, any ball but the 8).
  • After that contact, a ball must be pocketed or any ball must touch a cushion.
  • Pocket one of your balls and you shoot again; otherwise the turn passes.

Fouls → ball in hand

  • Scratch: the cue ball is pocketed.
  • No contact, or the wrong ball hit first.
  • No ball pocketed and no cushion hit after contact.
  • After a foul your opponent may place the cue ball anywhere on the table.

Winning and losing

  • With your group cleared, call a pocket and sink the 8 there to win.
  • You lose if you sink the 8 before your group is cleared, into an uncalled pocket, or on the same shot as a foul.

Time

  • Each player has 5 minutes plus 10 seconds per shot. Your clock starts once the balls stop rolling.
  • Running out of time loses the game. Draws are not possible in 8-ball.
