How to play Draughts (Checkers)
Capture all your opponent's pieces or leave them without a legal move.
Board and pieces
- 10×10 board; play uses the 50 dark squares, numbered 1–50 (shown in the corner of each square).
- Each side has 20 men. White moves first; who plays White is drawn at random.
Moving
- Men move one square diagonally forward.
- Kings fly: they move any distance along an empty diagonal.
Capturing
- Capturing is compulsory. If you can capture, you must.
- Majority rule: you must play the sequence that captures the most pieces. Kings and men count the same.
- Men capture forwards and backwards by jumping an adjacent piece to the empty square directly behind it.
- A king captures at a distance, landing on any empty square beyond the piece taken.
- Captured pieces are removed only after the whole move, and may not be jumped twice (Turkish strike).
Promotion
- A man that ends its move on the far row becomes a king.
- A man that only passes over the far row during a capture and finishes elsewhere stays a man.
Draws
- The same position occurs for the third time with the same player to move.
- 25 consecutive moves by each player with only kings moving and no capture.
- Three pieces (including a king) against a lone king: 16 moves each. Two or fewer against a lone king: 5 moves each.
- By agreement, using a draw offer.
Notation and time
- Moves are written square-to-square: 32-28 for a move, 19x30 for a capture.
- 10 minutes plus 5 seconds per move. Running out of time loses the game.
