How to play Chess

Checkmate your opponent's king — attack it so it has no legal escape.

Setup

  • 8×8 board with the light square on each player's right. White moves first; the challenger plays White.

How the pieces move

  • King: one square any direction. Queen: any distance in a straight line or diagonal. Rook: straight lines. Bishop: diagonals. Knight: an L shape, jumping over pieces.
  • Pawns move forward one square (two from their starting square) and capture diagonally.

Special moves

  • Castling: king two squares towards a rook, rook jumps over — only if neither has moved, the squares between are empty, and the king is not in, through or into check.
  • En passant: a pawn that just moved two squares can be captured as if it had moved one, on the very next move only.
  • Promotion: a pawn reaching the last rank becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight — your choice.

End of the game

  • Checkmate wins. Stalemate (no legal move, not in check) is a draw.
  • Draws are automatic for threefold repetition, the 50-move rule and positions where neither side can mate. Players can also agree a draw.
  • Running out of time loses — unless your opponent can't possibly checkmate, which is a draw (FIDE 6.9).
  • 10 minutes per player plus 5 seconds per move.
