How to play Reversi

Have more discs of your colour on the board than your opponent when neither side can move.

Setup

  • 8×8 board. Four discs start in the centre: white on d4 and e5, black on d5 and e4.
  • Black always moves first. Who plays Black is drawn at random for each game.

Making a move

  • Place a disc so that it outflanks one or more of your opponent's discs: a straight line (across, down or diagonal) of their discs with your new disc at one end and one of yours at the other.
  • Every outflanked disc, in every direction at once, flips to your colour.
  • A move must flip at least one disc. Discs are never removed and never move.

Passing

  • If you have no legal move, your turn passes automatically to your opponent.
  • You may never pass while you have a legal move.

End of the game

  • The game ends when neither player can move — usually when the board is full.
  • The player with more discs wins. Empty squares are added to the winner's count (WOF scoring).
  • Equal disc counts are a draw (the service fee still applies to staked games).
  • Running out of time loses the game.
